At the end of the school Freshmen and Sophomores will undergo oral examination in every course. Juries last for approximately half an hour. During this time, a jury consisting of department teachers and one or two community members will examine students' competence in a given subject. Competence in a particular subject does not test student knowledge of the content of that subject, and in this sense cannot be prepared for as one would normally prepare for a test covering some previous segment of the course. Instead, a jury will try to assess the student's ability to apply knowledge that has been gained through their study. It is a test of acquired skill rather than of assimilated knowledge. The aim of juries is thus to assess student competence in dealing with a generic task that typically confronts them when engaged in their respective disciplines. Student performance is judged on a pass/fail basis with recognition for excellence where that occurs. Members of the jury are given a rubric to help them reach a decision by vote, the teacher's vote counting double. At the end of each session jurors convey their assessment of performance to the student.
